Sporty Toyota Fortuner in India

Toyota Kirloskar Motors Limited has just launched the Fortuner TRD Celebratory Edition.  The new variant of the SUV is priced at Rs. 33.85 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi. Bookings are now open, and deliveries will begin shortly. Mechanically, the Fortuner TRD Celebratory Edition in unchanged, and the SUV is meant to commemorate its 10th year or sales in India. It’s based on the 2.8-liter diesel engine automatic 4X2 variant.

Cosmetic changes on the Fortuner TRD include a new front bumper that looks sporty, black fog lamp inserts, TRD garnish on the front grille, a dual tone roof wrap, a ‘10 years ‘Leadership’ badge on the front fender, revised 18-inch alloy wheels finished in charcoal black, rear bumper spoiler and TRD badging. On the inside, changes are limited to the leather upholstery color, which is now finished in maroon and black with contrast red stitching.

The luxury SUV’s 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel engine makes 177 Bhp of peak power and 450 Nm of peak torque. A 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox comes standard with the TRD edition, and a rear wheel drive layout is standard. Toyota also offers the Fortuner with a 2.7-liter petrol engine. The SUV also gets a four-wheel drive layout with the diesel engine, and a 6-speed manual gearbox option is also on offer in the lower variants.

The Fortuner has been India’s bestselling luxury SUV ever since it was launched way back in 2009. The body-on-ladder frame equipped SUV is a 7-seater, and is in its second generation. It shares its underpinnings with the legendary Toyota Hilux pickup truck and also the bestselling Innova Crysta SUV. Butch looks, an imposing street presence, bombproof reliability, great resale value and low maintenance costs are key selling points of the Fortuner.

As for competition, the Fortuner squares off against the likes of the Ford Endeavour, the Mahindra Alturas, the Honda CR-V and the Isuzu MU-X. In terms of sales, the Fortuner totally dominates the field, and has been outselling each one of its competitors for many years now. Toyota is working on BS6 engine petrol and diesel variants of the Fortuner, which will be launched early next year. The BS6 variants of the Fortuner could get expensive by as much as Rs. 6 lakhs.
