Keeping one’s car in top shape is what everyone wants, and to some extent, it is necessary as well, because a smooth running car means a car that will be your companion for long. However, there are often some small mistakes we inadvertently make that leads to unwanted damage of one or more parts of our car. Since, your ride is a very complex machine where the smooth functioning of one part is dependent on the flawless functioning of the other. Therefore, it is extremely vital that all the major parts of the car work in perfect sync so as to elongate the life of your ride. Therefore, we have compiled a list of the common mistakes made while riding that harm your car’s life. Make sure you go through the entire list so as to avoid making such mistakes in the future.
Passing Over Bad Roads in Speed
Yes, a lot of the new drivers think that driving over rough patches on the road at a fair amount of speed will lead to less disturbances in the cabin, and the car’s suspension can take the load of the car equally good even on rough patches. They could not be more wrong. While going over a rough patch on the road, the suspension of the car has to face more rapid depressions and hence this leads to the suspension of the car working overtime. Not to mention that the unwanted and sudden jerks put undue strain on the suspension leading to more wear and tear than normal.
Engine Braking and Lugging
Engine braking is one of the most overlooked aspect of driving as most people use brakes when going down a slope and thus put the car in neutral for the time. This not only stresses the brakes more than it should, but also impacts the transmission of your ride. However, some people go a step ahead and lug the engine while driving. This is even worse. Some people believe that driving a car in higher gear will return good mileage. Although driving the car at lower RPMs in higher gear does improves mileage, the speed should not be so slow that the car starts lugging the engine. Engine lugging can have disastrous impact on gearbox as well as engine of the car and leads to a lot of wear and tear. Another fact to be kept in mind while driving is avoiding downshift at high speeds, even this puts a lot of unwanted strain on the transmission of the car.
Cold Start and Turbo
Two most crucial things to know while starting and turning off the engine of the car. While doing a cold start never drive at higher RPMs as soon as the engine starts revving. In an idle state the lubricants of the car are not in the state to provide optimum lubrication and thus driving at high RPM after a cold start can damage engine permanently. Whereas if you are a car to stop and it has a turbocharger installed, make sure to allow the turbo of the car to cool before turning off the engine. To do so, ensure that you keep the engine in idle for few minutes before killing the power supply. Doing otherwise will lead to permanent damage in turbo and engine.
Tyre Pressure
Tyre is the one part of your car that is in constant touch with the ground and is used the most. However, what people do not realise is that maintaining adequate pressure in the tyres is vital for proper functioning of car. Inadequate tyre pressure not only leads to more and more wear and tear of the car, it can also impact handling and mileage of the car.
Timely Service
Last but not the least is maintaining a proper service schedule of your car. This is almost a no-brainer, just like other things that you use, your car also comes with mechanical parts and their proper maintenance ensures that the parts of the car will last for a longer time and your car continues serving you in a uniform and better manner.
