Toyota Innova Crysta BS6 CNG is expected to be launched in the next couple of months in India.

Toyota is working on a petrol-CNG variant of the Innova Crysta MPV for the Indian market. It is being learnt that Toyota Innova Crysta BS6 CNG will be offered with the 2.7L petrol engine and recently the G variant was spotted as a test mule by automotive enthusiast Mayur. Though, details are not available but we expect the power output of the engine on a lower side while running on the CNG fuel. Currently, in the MPV segment in the Indian market, no other automaker offers a CNG variant as most buyers prefer diesel vehicles due to higher torque.

On April 1, 2020, BS6 emission norms were introduced in India by the Union Government. Several top automakers such as Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors decided to discontinue their small diesel cars as the cost of upgrading the existing BS4 diesel engine to BS6 emission norms was too much to absorb. Now, as the rates of petrol and diesel fuel are almost similar, buyers are drifting towards petrol vehicles and for those who are unable to afford petrol, CNG comes as the best option. Therefore, the Japanese automaker is planning to introduce a low cost and budget friendly CNG version of Innova Crysta so that it is accessible to every section of society. Toyota Innova Crysta BS6 CNG is expected to be launched in the next couple of months in India.

Mechanically, the naturally aspirated 2.7L 4-cylinder petrol engine delivers a top power of 166bhp and peak torque of 245Nm. It can be availed with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard while an optional 6-speed automatic gearbox is also available. However, it remains to be seen how much drop the power output and torque performance will witness with CNG fuel and will the automatic unit be offered with it. The price gap between the petrol and diesel variants of Toyota Innova Crysta is Rs 2 Lakhs and the company intends to bridge this gap by positioning the CNG variant in between. Toyota is looking to attract those buyers with CNG fuel who find diesel rather expensive. So, let's wait and watch for a bit more until it's finally out!
