Toyota unveiled a unique concept at the New York motor show, the FT-4X SUV. Built keeping the dynamic millennial generation in mind, Toyota offers an integrated GoPro camera built into the driver’s side rear-view mirror, all-weather protection and a ruggedly lean design structure.
“I love this idea of mechanical satisfaction because while we’re living in today’s digital world, we took something that’s based on physical movements and made that a large part of what this vehicle is. We want everyone to interact with this car and feel a sense of delight and excitement," said Calty Studio chief designer Ian Cartabiano. The FT-4X is appropriate for all kinds of outings with its capabilities more 'casual core' rather than hardcore. It follows Toyota's new global architecture C-Platform and will run on 18-inch wheels wrapped in off-road tyres.
Even the designing process was different as the designers started with the rear rather than the front. The concept will not include an engine; Toyota said if it did, it’d likely be a small-displacement, four-cylinder unit driving all four wheels. The car would use a selectable low-range gearbox to boost its off-road ability. “You can really tell that we had a blast designing the FT-4X because it looks fun to use and fun to drive,” continued Cartabiano.
