The Tata Nano is expected to get a new lease of life with a fully electric powertrain. Sources suggest that an all-electric Nano is currently under development and is expected to make its debut later this year. The EV Nano is expected to have better performance and a longer range when compared to the Mahindra e20. In 2010, Tata had a Nano EV concept on display at the Geneva motor show, that particular concept used a super-polymer lithium battery with a promised range of 160km per charge.
Initially, the car is expected to be launched only for the taxi segment. At the moment, two electric taxi providers in India use the Mahindra e2o as their option. Tata has been focusing on further developing electric vehicle technology from its UK-based Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC). The same centre was responsible for developing the Bolt EV and the Tiago EV which was unveiled last month.
The TMETC developed Tiago EV is powered by an 85kW motor, offering 200Nm torque and a range of around 100km.
The facelifted car is priced at Rs 34.20 lakh and now comes with a more powerful 184hp 2.0-litre diesel engines; no manual variant now.
