Volkswagen India is showcasing the all-new Taigun SUV for the Indian market at the Auto Expo 2020. Underpinning the MQB A0 IN architecture, it was unveiled a couple of days back in a grand event hosted by the VW Group in New Delhi. The Taigun has been specifically developed for our country while it is expected to be launched sometime around 2021.
The production-spec model of Volkswagen Taigun will share several elements with the Skoda Vision IN, which was also unveiled at the same event by VW Group. The duo will be mid-sized SUVs, taking on the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The India-spec Taigun SUV design is akin to the global model of T-Cross SUV, however it is a bit longer in length in order to offer adequate rear seat legroom. The wheelbase stands at 2651mm which is around 100mm more than the T-Cross. Even the ground clearance of 205mm is India-specific.
The company, keeping in mind the Indian buyers, has used chrome on the front grille and bumper. The rear end boasts of LED tail-lamp cluster while the flashy rims on this particular vehicle might not make their way to the production-spec model. The cabin would feature a multi-layered dashboard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and all-digital instrument cluster. The Latin American model of Volkswagen T-Cross was awarded the highest 5-star safety rating by Latin NCAP. So, the Taigun is also expected to be on the same lines with utmost significance given to safety and security of the occupants.
Under the hood, Volkswagen Taigun will have the BS6 compliant 1.5 litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which will comprise of the cylinder-deactivation technology. Though, the VW fans will miss the presence of a diesel engine, but the company is contemplating the introduction of a CNG variant for budget-friendly buyers. The Taigun SUV will have huge local content under the India 2.0 project and unlike all the previous VW models, it will be priced very aggressively.
