Volkswagen Group has teamed up with the Israeli tech startup Mobileye Global to bring new Level 4 automated driving vehicles, including a self-driving variant of the ID. Buzz. Under the new collaboration, a self-driving system manufactured by Mobileye will be integrated into VW’s future models across the group brands. The companies will manufacture Level 4 autonomous vehicles for the commercial market.

The auto giant will utilize the expertise of Mobileye Global in hardware components, software, and digital mapping to enable the vehicles to function autonomously within a few urban regions. The EVs will feature high-performance computers, radar units, cameras, and Lidar technology, which will provide map updates and real-time data. Additionally, Mobileye is all set to supply more technology components for automated driving to VW’s commercial vehicles.

The Mobileye SuperVision and Mobileye Chauffeur platforms provide the foundation of Mobileye's highly autonomous driving technology. The famous brands of the Volkswagen Group, like Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, and Porsche, will utilize these technologies to swiftly unveil new premium driving features across a range of vehicles with various powertrain configurations.

The technology incorporates advanced assistance systems for urban and highway driving, such as autonomous overtaking on multilane highways in approved zones and circumstances. It also incorporates automated halting at stop signs and red lights and support at crossroads and roundabouts.

The CEO of Volkswagen Group and Porsche AG, Oliver Blume, said, “Our goal is to offer our customers throughout the world outstanding products with cutting-edge technology. New automated driving functions will significantly boost convenience and safety. These functions, which will be tailored to our brands and products, will make every trip a personal, individual experience. In Mobileye, we have an additional first-class partner to shape this automotive future together.”

The President and CEO of Mobileye, Prof. Amnon Shashua, commented on the collaboration between the two brands and said, “We are proud to work closely with Volkswagen Group to make the future of driving safer, more automated and more rewarding. Through these programs, we see Volkswagen Group leading the industry in putting AI-powered advanced driver assistance technology in the hands of consumers globally and developing new services with autonomous vehicles.”

Mobileye and Volkswagen Group have already formed partnerships for advanced driver assistance systems. VW Group will benefit from Mobileye’s Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities. Although the new technology enables drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel, they still must stay attentive when driving.

Both brands are currently also working on Level 3 features, which will not need continuous driver attention as they are capable of temporarily taking over certain driving tasks. VW and Mobileye are jointly developing this new technology. Mobileye will install a Level 4 fully automated driving system on the new Volkswagen ID. Buzz when the vehicle goes into series production for mobility and transportation services.
