The carmaker will unveil its next-gen Polo (sold as the Vento in some markets) at the end of the year. The New Polo will be based on the carmaker's modular MQB (A0) platform. The next car to be built on the platform will be the new Volkswagen Virtus sedan, which will replace the Polo. The carmaker showed a computer-generated rendering at an international motor show recently.
VW sells other similarly sized sedans globally, like the Voyage in South America and the Polo sedan, based on the outgoing Polo (Vento for India) in markets like India, South Africa, Russia and a few Far East nations. With the Virtus, it plans to replace these cars with a single model for greater economies of scale.
The current Polo sedan's wheelbase is slightly longer than the hatchback, so expect the upcoming Virtus sedan’s cabin will be spacious and slightly longer and wider overall than the outgoing car. Engines will probably be similar to the next-gen Polo that’s due soon and the car will compete with the likes of the Honda City, the new Hyundai Verna and the Suzuki Ciaz in the international markets.
The India launch for the Virtus is dependent on the outcome of the recently signed MOU between VW and Tata Motors. The two companies are currently evaluating making cars on Tata Motors' new AMP platform.
