Both trims are now part of the baby XC range; R-Design edition prices to be dearer.

The first lot of 200 cars were sold out two weeks from the XC40’s launch. Volvo has now added two more trims after gauging demand, the Momentum and Inscription, while prices for the R-Design trim have gone up.

The XC40 comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, wireless mobile phone charging, a 750-watt, 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, Volvo's 9.0-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a powered tailgate, and heated front and rear seats. The base Momentum trim gets 18-inch alloys (in a different design) and the same infotainment system, but it misses out on all the features mentioned above. Plus, it gets standard cruise control, instead of the R-Design's adaptive cruise control.

The Inscription variant comes with a different design and finish for the grille, six-spoke, diamond-cut alloy wheels, subtle chrome elements for the exterior, driftwood inlays for the interior, electrically-foldable rear-seat headrests, a crystal gear knob and a charging point in the boot. Safety tech is the same on all variants – you get lane-keeping assist, blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control, pilot assist, emergency braking, ESP, traction control, hill-descent control and eight airbags as standard.

The XC40 is powered by a single 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel (D4) engine, which sends 190hp and 400Nm to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The XC40 Momentum costs Rs 39.9 lakh, while the R-Design (which was launched at an introductory price of Rs 39.9 lakh) now costs Rs 42.9 lakh and the top-of-the-line Inscription variant is priced at Rs 43.9 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom).
