The company intends to shift focus to electric vehicles and intends to roll out five battery-powered models in the near future. The VW I.D concept, nicknamed e-Golf, was revealed at the 2016 Paris Motor Show and will most likely be launched in 2020 in its production form. The cars will be based on its new MEB platform. The I.D is powered by a 125kW electric motor and can accelerate from 0-100kph in less than 8.0sec. The car will most likely run 400-600km on a full charge.
The I.D Cross, a concept previewed at the Shanghai motor show this year, will follow the e-Golf and works with two electric motors powered by an 83kWh lithium-ion battery. The car is four-wheel-drive and sees a combined output of 225kW and a range of up to 500km.
Following these models will be the I.D. AEROe sedan and the I.D. Lounge crossover. A production version of its I.D Buzz concept, which is powered by dual electric motors and makes 275kW power and a can hit 100kph time of just 5.0sec, is also likely.
The company intends to price them to rival similar combustion engine cars. VW will take on Tesla as it aims to sell a million electric cars by 2025.
