India is the largest two-wheeler market in the world, and is also a strong market for the Japanese two-wheeler brand. Currently, Indonesia is Yamaha two-wheeler’s biggest market, where it sold 1.45 million units in 2016. Coming in at No 2 is Vietnam, where 8,00,000 Yamahas were sold in 2016; the company estimates that India will become its second-largest market by end of 2017.
Meanwhile, India Yamaha Motor sold a total of 7,80,000 two-wheelers in 2016, 53 percent of which were scooters. For 2017, the company is gunning to sell one million units, of which, up to 6,00,000 units could be scooters.
Yamaha expects to make India its biggest market in the next five years, and it seems to be capable of delivering too. It already has an annual production capacity of 1.8 million units in India.
Plus, the company is also moving in the direction of strengthening its India operations. For instance, India is the only country to produce the recently launched FZ25 naked street motorcycle, which it could export to other markets. Besides the one million unit target in domestic sales, the company also plans on exporting 2,00,000 bikes in 2017.
MV Agusta's CEO Timur Sardarov said in an interview, "MV Agusta is entering the biggest relevant market in the world, which is 350cc to 500cc. We are coming up with a new 350cc engine, we have it, it’s a twin."
