The car will also feature a new plug-in petrol-hybrid drivetrain.

The company has commenced testing the next-generation A-class’ autonomous functions. The driverless technology from the S-class will make its debut on the upcoming A-class as well.

The new A-class will be able to steer and brake itself up to certain speeds, and it'll do this by using the car's lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control technology. The car’s overall design will be more aggressive and will be influenced by the Concept A, with slimmer headlights and wider front grille. It will also feature a longer wheelbase and higher roofline to free up space in the cabin.

The interior will be plusher and will feature Mercedes’ latest infotainment system – top trims could feature a widescreen display integrated more cleanly into the dash than the unit in the current A-class. This car will also feature a new plug-in petrol-hybrid drivetrain, which will allow the car to go 50km on pure-electric charge. An updated line-up of turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines will feature under the hood. These engines are improved in terms of performance and emissions are lesser too, compared to the current car.

The range-topping AMG A45 version is expected to produce close to 406hp and will go up against Audi’s next-gen RS3.
