The company’s i models that will follow will utilise different forms of this setup.

The company will showcase what it calls the most advanced electric powertrain technology it has developed, yet. In 2020, the car, called the iX3, will be part of the fourth-generation X3 range and will promise zero emissions.

An iX3 test mule was seen testing in Scandinavia in temperatures below -10deg Celsius. The iX3 will be built on BMW’s CLAR structure, which underpins the X3, as well as the latest 5-Series and 7-series models. Styling of the electric versions might be discreet, Mini brand boss Sebastian Mackensen said that the marque “doesn’t need to make a big statement” about EVs.

The electric tech that powers this car will be the most advanced put into production by BMW. Just like in this car, BMW's fifth-generation EV platform will be used in 11 more electric BMWs, due to arrive by 2025. Each of BMW's new electric models will feature an 'i' at the start of its name to tell it apart.
