The full-size SUV segment has never lost its shine in the Indian market. The two of most popular SUVs in this segment - Toyota Fortuner & Ford Endeavour - were recently introduced with BS6 compliant engines. You all must have seen some great rivalries in several different verticals over the years such as Federer vs Nadal, Ali vs Frazier, Tendulkar vs Akhtar, ShahRukh vs Aamir etc. among others. Same is the case with Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour as they have been at loggerheads with each other for over 11 years. Over the time, they have seen multiple facelifts and new-gen models too but ferocity of the competition has never died down. So, let's talk about the BS6 Toyota Fortuner and BS6 Ford Endeavour in detail and find out who is the best among the two:
Toyota Fortuner, despite the BS6 upgrade, retains its dimensions from the earlier model. On the identical lines, the BS6 Ford Endeavour dimensions are similar to the BS4 model. Looking upon all the parameters such as length, width, height, ground clearance and wheelbase, it can be easily said that Ford designers and engineers have done a wonderful job and they have been highly successful in slaying the Toyota beast in all of these. The BS6 Ford Endeavour is bigger, wider, taller and spacious than its Toyota rival, while also coming with a higher ground clearance.
We will take into account the BS6 compliant diesel engines of both the SUVs as the Ford Endeavour is not available with the option of a petrol engine. If we compare both the engines thoroughly, it is fairly evident that the Fortuner is a tad more powerful than the Endeavour. Though, torque is similar but the automatic variant of Fortuner gets an advantage of 30Nm over the Endeavour. In addition, Toyota provides you the option of choosing from manual and automatic transmission with the Fortuner while the Endeavour is only available with a first-of-its-kind 10-speed automatic gearbox. So, in terms of performance, the Toyota Fortuner fares better than the Ford Endeavour -- at least on paper.
Both the SUVs carry the essential styling features in the form of Bi-LED headlamps, LED tail lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels and powered tailgate. As looks are a purely subjective matter, hence we would leave it to you to decide which one you will prefer out of these two rugged beasts.
As for the Endeavour, it boasts of a myriad of premium features such as an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto & SYNC 3 connectivity suite, panoramic sun-roof, automatic headlamps and wipers, DRLs, dual-zone automatic climate control, 8-way power-adjustable driver & front passenger seat, push start button, hand-free power lift rear gate, etc. among others. Furthermore, the likes of fold-flat second- and power-fold third-row, Active Noise Cancellation, Terrain Management System (TMS) with four preset modes – Normal, Snow/Mud/Grass, Sand and Rock make it even more desirable. In addition, it also gets Ford’s globally-renowned mobility and connectivity solution FordPass as standard.
Toyota Fortuner comes loaded with a plethora of bells and whistles in the form of Leatherette upholstery with two color choices, Power-adjustable driver & front passenger seats, Auto-dimming internal rear-view mirror, Automatic climate control, Tilt & telescopic steering wheel, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with embedded navigation and paddle shifters. It gets the distinction of being the only SUV in its segment to come with a telescopically adjustable steering wheel. However strange it might appear, but it misses out on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which nowadays can be seen on a 5-7 Lakhs car. The Toyota SUV also misses out on a sunroof altogether. So, as far as features are concerned, Ford Endeavour has an edge over the Toyota Fortuner.
Both the SUVs feature some of the basic safety features as standard which include 7-airbags, ABS with EBD, hill assist control, vehicle stability control, rear parking sensors, rear parking camera etc. among others. Though, it would have been better if the Toyota engineers have equipped the Fortuner with front parking sensors too like the Endeavour as it would have made the parking easier for the driver.
The Endeavour starts around Rs 60,000 lower than the Fortuner while its range-topping variant too is nearly Rs 70,000 cheaper than the Toyota SUV. But, Ford has announced that it will increase the prices of Endeavour by Rs 70,000 across the entire variant lineup. However, Toyota Fortuner petrol range starts at Rs 28.18 Lakhs but since we are comparing the diesel variants only, we will not be taking it into account.
