Vehicles with invalid or non-functional FASTag will be charged a double toll fee now applicable on National Highways

The Central Government is all set to amend rules on the usage of FASTag at toll plaza's across the country. Recently, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway issued a circular stating that vehicles with invalid or non-functional FASTag will be charged double the toll fee applicable on National Highways. Before the amendment of this circular, the vehicle owner had to pay twice the fee only if the vehicle entered into the FASTag lane without an RFID sticker.

According to the determination of Rates and Collection Rules, 2008, the amendment in the National Highway fee will be applicable to all categories of vehicles. FASTag was made mandatory to all vehicles in India from 15th December 2019 onwards. It is basically a technique through which all the travelers pay toll fees at the highway electronically. FASTag basically employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments on national highways directly from a prepaid or a savings account linked to it. A prepaid tag, fixed on vehicles’ windscreen, allows the automated deduction of toll charges and lets the vehicle pass through a toll plaza with zero human contact.

FASTtag has actually eased the process of paying the toll fees. It has also reduced the waiting time of motorists at toll plaza's on the highway. It can be purchased at a number of approved places, including certain banks, toll plazas, and other places. The installation and usage of FASTag are quite simple and can be done with just a few easy steps. Due to the COVID’19 crisis, the government had discontinued the toll collection process during the initial phase of lockdown. However, the Ministry recently announced that toll plazas will resume toll collection with the easing of the lockdown regulations.
