Indian Army Inducts Mahindra eVerito in Its Fleet

The government of India is undertaking several measures to promote electric cars in the Indian market. While some of the moves of the government may cause minor disruptions and unease in fossil fuel car market, the government is also working on adopting electric cars itself. In the latest move to adopt electric cars, the Army has now inducted Mahindra eVerito electric car in their fleet. The total number of eVerito electric cars inducted by the Indian Army is 10 as of now. These cars were supplied by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a government undertaking that promoted electric vehicles among other things in the country.

This move comes amid the government’s aim of inducting over 10,000 electric cars in its fleet and going full electric by 2030. Mahindra is also not the lone company that supplies electric cars to the government, other Indian maker Tata also supplies its electric Tigor to the government. Mahindra eVerito saw a price drop in recent times as the tax on electric cars was reduced from 12% to 5%. This effective tax benefit saw the prices of the eVerito come down by Rs. 80,000.

Earlier Mahindra also sold the e2O electric hatchback in the Indian market but the advent of stricter safety norms in April 2019 saw the maker discontinue the car in Indian market as the hatch did not qualify for the safety standard. Talking of eVerito, it is a 4-door sedan which is essentially the electrified version of the Verito (Renault Logan) sedan that Mahindra earlier sold in the market. The eVerito comes with an electric motor that is rated to deliver 42 Bhp and 91 Nm. The transmission duties on the car are handled by a CVT automatic gearbox. The electric car from Mahindra comes with a range of 140 kilometres when fully charged and comes with regenerative braking mechanism as standard. As far as the prices of eVerito are concerned, the car is sold in 3 trims and the E2 trim is priced at Rs. 15.95 lakhs, the E4 trim at Rs. 16.24 lakhs and the top E6 trim at Rs. 16.36 lakhs. Mahindra is also working on electrification of other cars in its line-up in India. The Formula E experience that the company has gathered over the years will surely be put to effective use when it expands its electric car portfolio in the Indian market. Among the expected electric cars that may see the day of light from Mahindra’s stables are electric version of the micro-SUV KUV100 and the electric version of sub-4 metre compact SUV XUV300.
