It will share its engine with the 43 range and will sit below AMG 63 models.

The company’s new petrol-electric hybrid line-up will be positioned below its 63 range. The first model in the range will be shown at the 2018 Detroit Show and will be the CLS 53. It will be part of the next-generation CLS range that's set to be revealed at this year’s Los Angeles motor show.

The car will be powered by AMG’s 3.0-litre straight-six engine which will work with a 50kW electric motor to produce a total of 435hp. The '53' nomenclature, according to the company, will feature exclusively on AMG models powered by petrol-electric hybrid powertrains.

The car is also expected to feature regenerative braking technology to help charge the lithium-ion batteries.
