All-New Volkswagen Vento expected to arrive before new Skoda Rapid in the Indian market

Volkswagen Group merged 3 passenger car entities under its wing to form Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd (SAVWIPL) this year. The German automaker is planning to launch new models in the country under its new India Plan 2.0. Under the new plan, the manufacturer is making efforts to localize the production as much as possible. According to a media report, Skoda Global CEO Bernhard Maie wants 95 percent localization of the upcoming models under the Indian 2.0 project.  Under the new India-specific plan, we will see the development and production of new models from Volkswagen and Skoda. The current generation models of Vento and Rapid are going to be replaced by all-new versions in India by mid-2021.

As per latest update, Skoda Vision IN is expected to be launched first followed by Volkswagen Taigun while the New-Gen Volkswagen Vento will arrive in India before Skoda Rapid. German automaker’s upcoming vehicles will be based on India specific MQB-A0-IN platform. Both the sedans will features a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that is currently doing service in VW Vento and Polo. The engine here delivers 110 hp of maximum power output with transmission duties being taken care by a 6-speed manual gearbox and 6-speed torque converter unit. Indian buyers can look forward to a bigger 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine powering both the Vision IN and Taigun SUV's coming next year. This would be missing in the New-Gen Vento and Rapid to lower its production costs.

As we await the official confirmation on Vento and Skoda Rapid sedans, Volkswagen has listed Taigun SUV on its official website. Interestingly, Tiguan will become the first model to roll out of production under the Volkswagen India 2.0 plan. Expect the new SUV to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit, it will be mated either to a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. When launched, Taigun will compete against the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Hector, Tata Harrier in the domestic market.
