Cullinan name carried forward from Project Cullinan moniker.

The carmaker has confirmed that its upcoming SUV will be called the Cullinan. The brand refuses to call this car an SUV though, it prefers to refer to it as an ‘all-terrain, high-sided vehicle’.

Inspired by the Cullinan Diamond, a 3106-carat jewel extracted from a South African mine in 1905, Rolls-Royce boss Torsten Muller-Otvos said that the name was “hiding in plain sight”, and added, “It is the most fitting name for our extraordinary new product.”

This three-year old project will culminate as the first SUV from Rolls Royce. Under the hood will most probably be the Phantom’s 6.8-litre, V12 engine, which makes 571hp and 900Nm. The carmaker may introduce a hybrid version soon as well. This car shares its all-new aluminium spaceframe chassis with the Phantom.

Test mules of the Cullinan have been spotted in the Arctic Circle, deserts of the Middle East as well as the famed Nurburgring. The car will debut internationally this year.
