Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has acquired a significant milestone of producing over 15 lakh made-in-India models from its state-of-the-art engine and vehicle manufacturing plant in Chakan, Pune. Under the India 2.0 project, Volkswagen and Skoda currently locally produce vehicles for both domestic and international markets. This duo retails cars like Taigun, Kushaq, Virtus, and Slavia. These cars are based on the MQB-A0-IN platform that was designed for Indian vehicles.
Additionally, the VW Group announced that they have locally manufactured more than 3.80 lakh engines and over 3 lakh units of the Indian-made 2.0 products. Skoda and VW have been manufacturing new models in the country at their Chakan facility, which was set up in 2007. The first car manufactured at the Chakan Plant was the Skoda Fabia. The Group has manufactured over 1.5 million vehicles at the same facility until now. Over time, the duo has produced now-discontinued cars like the Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Ameo, Polo, and Vento.

Commenting on achieving the new milestone, the Managing Director & CEO at SAVWIPL, Piyush Arora, said, “The significant output of 1.5 million vehicles at our Chakan Plant, coupled with the production milestone of four successful MQB models and the 10-year journey of our Engine Shop stand testament to our dedication to India’s automotive industry and SAVWIPL’s significant contribution to the nation’s talent and workforce.”
The Volkswagen and Skoda car ranges are considered the safest made-in-India car models, as they have received 5-star ratings in Global NCAP crash tests for both child and adult occupants. From their Indian manufacturing plant, both car brands export 30 percent of their overall products to overseas markets.
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited started locally manufacturing engines in 2015. The first 1.5-liter TDI diesel engine was produced for the Polo hatchback model. The automakers are celebrating a decade of engine manufacturing at its facility. As of now, the companies have manufactured 380,000 engines in the country. The Chakan facility has also produced other robust engines like a 2.0-liter TDI diesel, a 1.0-liter petrol, and 1.2 MPI petrol engines.
