The Tata Harrier is going to be the first car to get safety rating under India’s new vehicle safety testing agency, Bharat NCAP. This Programme was started as the country’s own vehicle assessment Programme in August 2023. A few days prior, the website of Bharat NCAP went live, showcasing crash test pictures of the Tata Punch and Kia Sonet.
India has now become the world’s fifth country to have its own vehicle crash safety test network. This programme has been specifically adapted for Indian safety standards based on the Global NCAP. The main aim of this new programme is to improve the standard of vehicle safety in India. The Central Government has teamed up with the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) in Pune to test cars that are sold in the country. Earlier, Indian car makers used to take their products abroad for safety testing under the Global NCAP protocol.

According to recent reports, the Tata Harrier has undergone crash tests, and the ratings will be disclosed in the upcoming 3-4 weeks. Tata has already gained a 5-star rating from Global NCAP for both the new Tata Safari and Harrier at the time of their official launch in October 2023. Global NCAP discontinued its “Safer Cars for India” initiative in India after the introduction of Bharat NCAP.
Other manufacturers like Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, and Hyundai have offered a few versions of their forthcoming models to get tested under the Bharat NCAP. According to some officials, the government’s move to test cars in the country is getting massive support from the automotive industry because gaining the star rating from abroad would cost them more than getting their car tested here. The secretariat of NCAP will give ratings to the tested cars on a scale of 0 to 5 on its official website.
