Tesla has finally confirmed its entry into the Indian market. The American electric automaker will launch its first model, dubbed as Model 3, in the country by June 2021. The bookings will officially commence from next month. As for deliveries, it is slated to begin from the end of the first quarter of the financial year 2021-22. We can expect the price to fall in the range of Rs 55 lakhs - Rs 60 lakhs (ex-showroom).
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla had earlier announced his plans to enter the Indian market in 2016. The company had also begun pre-bookings for a brief time back then. A few corporate stalwarts like Paytm founder Vijay Sekhar Sharma, Voonik CEO Sujayath Ali and Pinstorm CEO Mahesh Murthy were among the first to book the car.
Tesla Model 3 is the entry-level sedan in the American automaker’s arsenal. It was first rolled out in 2017. It is considered to be one of the most affordable and best selling all-electric cars in the global market. At present, it is available in 4 variants namely Standard Range (RWD), Standard Range Plus (RWD), Long Range (AWD), and Long Range Performance (AWD). Performance-wise, it offers a range of 500 kms. The battery size ranges from 50 kWh to 75 kWh. Also, it can be charged in merely 15 minutes. Furthermore, it will be imported as a CBU in India.
According to the sources, Tesla has managed to achieve the desired global sales figures for Model S and Model X. Now the company intends to push the numbers for Model 3. Furthermore, Tesla is likely to open a plant in India. The company has discussed the possibilities of investing in a manufacturing facility with the state governments of Maharashtra and Kerala.
