The ongoing pandemic has affected the automobile industry. The first half of the year saw extremely low sales numbers. But thankfully in the second half of the year, some recovery was observed. This year, we saw a host of big car launches in India. Talking about the SUV segment, it is the most lucrative one in the Indian market. That said, we have listed the ‘Top 5 SUVs that have been launched during 2020’ in the Indian market. 


Hyundai Creta

Hyundai India launched the 2020 New-Gen Creta at an introductory price of Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom) earlier this year. The SUV is offered in 5 trims - E, EX, S, SX, and SX (O). Furthermore, it adorns Hyundai's next generation 'Sensuous Sportiness' design language. In terms of features, the SUV gets several premium bells and whistles. Under the bonnet, the Creta is available with three BS6 compliant engine options borrowed from Kia Seltos. The petrol variants get a 1.5-litre MPi naturally aspirated engine offered with a 6-speed manual and a CVT gearboxes. There is also a high-performance 1.4-litre Kappa T-GDi engine linked to a 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox. The diesel variants source power from a 1.5-litre turbocharged U2 CRDi engine that can be availed with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic transmissions. 


Kia Sonet

Kia Motors launched the Sonet at a starting price of Rs 6.71 lakh (ex-showroom) in September this year. The subcompact SUV is offered in two trims - Tech Line and GT Line. Cosmetically, it gets a bold look. Kia has equipped the Sonet with a plethora of high-tech connectivity features. Under the bonnet, the Sonet is offered with three BS6 compliant engines. A 1.2-litre naturally aspirated unit mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. There is a more powerful 1.0-litre 3-cylinder T-GDi engine offered with either an iMT (AMT) gearbox or a 7-speed DCT automatic unit. For diesel variants, there is a 1.5-litre CRDi motor available with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic transmissions. 


Mahindra Thar

Mahindra & Mahindra launched the much-anticipated Thar at an introductory price of Rs 9.80 lakh (ex-showroom) in October this year. The SUV was initially introduced in two trims - AX and LX. Later, the company discontinued the base AX trim. Now the vehicle is only available in the LX variant and the price for that starts at Rs 12.49 lakhs (ex-showroom). Mahindra has updated the Thar to not only make it a better off roader but also a better city vehicle in comparison to the outgoing model. The SUV was also awarded with a 4-star rating in the Global NCAP safety test conducted recently. Performance-wise, the Thar is propelled by two engine options - a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol mill and a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder CRDi diesel unit. Both these engines can be availed with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission as options. 


Mercedes GLS

Mercedes Benz India launched the All-New GLS SUV at Rs 99.90 lakhs (ex-showroom) in the country. In comparison to its predecessor, the SUV has grown in size. Furthermore, it is based on Mercedes’s Modular High Architecture (MHA) architecture. It comes packed with a plethora of segment-first features. The SUV also features the latest #MercedesMe app. Under the hood, it is powered by a BS6 compliant twin 3.0-litre in-line 6-cylinder engine. The petrol engine comes paired with a 48V mild-hybrid EQ system. Both petrol and diesel powertrains are linked to a 9-speed torque converter automatic transmission. 


MG Gloster

MG Motor India had launched the Gloster at an introductory price of Rs 28.98 lakhs (ex-showroom) in the country. The SUV is offered in a total of four grades - Super, Smart, Sharp, and Savvy. Being dubbed as the country's first Autonomous (Level 1) Premium SUV, it comes loaded with several exquisite features. Performance-wise, the MG Gloster SUV is powered by a BS6 compliant 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine with Super and Smart trims. The engine can be availed with a 8-speed automatic transmission. The top-end trims namely Sharp and Savvy are powered by a twin-turbocharged version of the same diesel engine while being paired with the same 8-speed automatic unit.
